Yin yoga is a slow paced, meditative style of yoga designed to enhance and cultivate mobility by targeting the deeper connective tissues (ligaments, joints, deep fascial networks) with very little to no muscular effort. The passive, yielding nature of Yin yoga provides nourishment to the body and mind and invites the practitioner to experience a deeper state of awareness, emotional release, and sense of calm and equanimity, resulting in a quieter, clearer mind and enhanced vitality. The practice of Yin yoga involves seated or supine postures focusing mainly on the connective tissues of the hips, legs, spine, neck and shoulders. Postures are held for 1-7 minutes with or without props. The long-held postures encourage a deeper opening of the body and a meditative experience for the mind. It is particularly suited for those looking to increase joint mobility and/or those looking to bring balance to an active lifestyle.
